Two factors. Relevance, and engagement. Read them slowly, because the details matter more than they look.

"Title, description, and video content." Not tags. Not hashtags. Not the filename, not the upload time, not the category. Three things, and the third is the video itself — the words spoken in it, what is visually in it, what it is actually about. The metadata fields that dominate every SEO checklist are two out of three, and the one that gets the least attention in those checklists is the one you cannot fake.

"What videos drive the most engagement for a search." This is the part that turns YouTube search from a text-matching problem into a behavioural one. It is not asking which video best matches the words. It is asking which video, historically, satisfied people who typed those words. Those are very different questions, and optimising for the first while ignoring the second is the central error of traditional YouTube SEO.

The same documentation adds a framing that is worth holding onto: "our recommendation system doesn't promote videos to your audience but rather finds videos for your audience when they visit YouTube." Search is the purest expression of that. Nobody is distributing your video. Somebody typed a question, and the system is choosing which of several million candidates answers it best for that specific person.

The reframe that makes the rest of this piece obvious

YouTube search is not a document retrieval problem with a video attached. It is a question of which video, among all the ones that could plausibly match, most reliably ends the searcher's search. Every genuinely effective tactic below is a way of making that more likely. Every dead tactic is a way of making the text match better without making the answer better.

Why the bad advice exists, and why it persists

It is worth understanding how the folklore formed, because the pattern tells you which future advice to distrust.

YouTube's ranking has been through three broad eras. In the first, roughly up to 2012, views and clicks dominated, and the winning strategy really was aggressive metadata plus a thumbnail that overpromised. That era produced the tactics — keyword stuffing, tag farming, misleading packaging — that still form the backbone of the guides. In the second, from 2012 onward, watch time became the organising metric, which killed the worst of the clickbait arbitrage and rewarded longer, denser videos. In the third, which we are in, satisfaction signals sit above watch time, and the platform's stated ranking factors reduce to relevance plus what actually satisfies searchers.

Each era's tactics kept being republished into the next one. The tag-optimisation guides that circulate today are direct descendants of advice that was correct in 2011, updated cosmetically with a new year in the headline. Nobody re-derived them, because re-deriving them would have meant reading the documentation and discovering the advice had expired.

Three forces keep it alive. The first is commercial: a large tool industry sells optimisation of exactly the fields YouTube has deprioritised, and a tool that told you tags do not matter would have less to sell. The second is structural: YouTube SEO content is written overwhelmingly by people summarising other YouTube SEO content, which propagates errors faster than it corrects them — the fifteen-hashtag figure being the cleanest example, wrong by a factor of four and repeated everywhere. The third is psychological, and it is the strongest. Metadata advice is actionable. You can complete it. "Make a video that satisfies the searcher better than the eight videos already ranking" is correct and offers nothing to tick off, so the checklist wins even when it is wrong.

The practical filter this gives you is simple. When you read a YouTube SEO claim, ask whether it points at anything YouTube published. Most do not. The ones that do are short, unexciting, and almost entirely about relevance and satisfaction — which is the whole reason they are unpopular.

What YouTube says about the fields you have been optimising

Before building anything, it is worth clearing the ground. The following are not opinions or test results from someone's channel. They are what YouTube publishes about its own product, and they contradict the standard advice directly.

Tags: "not important"

YouTube's search and discovery guidance rates tags as "Not important", with the explanation that "Tags are primarily used to help correct for common spelling mistakes." The dedicated help page on tags says the same thing at more length: "Tags can be useful if the content of your video is commonly misspelled. Otherwise, tags play a minimal role in your video's discovery." And it names what does matter instead: "Your video's title, thumbnail, and description are more important pieces of metadata for your video's discovery."

There is no ambiguity here and there has not been for years. Yet tag research remains a headline feature of most creator tools, tag-copying extensions are among the most installed browser add-ons in the space, and "tag optimisation" is a service people sell. The gap between the documentation and the industry is not a subtle disagreement about weighting. It is a field the platform has written off and a market that kept charging for it.

What to actually do with tags: spend ninety seconds. Add the obvious variants of your subject, including any spelling people genuinely get wrong. Then stop. There is no version of this where more effort pays.

Hashtags: the number everyone repeats is wrong

Search for how many hashtags to use on YouTube and you will be told fifteen, confidently, on page after page. YouTube's own hashtag documentation says something different: "If a video or playlist has more than 60 hashtags, we'll ignore each hashtag on that content."

Sixty. Not fifteen. And the failure mode is not a warning — every hashtag on the video stops counting. The documentation adds two more things the guides mostly skip. Over-tagging "may result in the removal of your video from your uploads or from search", and hashtags "not directly related to the video" are treated as misleading, which "may result in the removal of your video or playlist". The risk of aggressive hashtagging is not wasted effort. It is deranking or removal.

The genuinely useful mechanic in that documentation is one the fifteen-hashtag guides get roughly right by accident: "Up to three hashtags that are considered most engaging will appear by your video title." Three hashtags surface above the title on the watch page, and YouTube picks which three based on engagement rather than your ordering. So the practical rule is to use a small number of accurate, genuinely relevant hashtags, because the display slot is capped at three regardless of how many you add, and everything past that is downside with no upside.

It is worth sitting with why the wrong number is so widespread. Nobody checked. One post said fifteen, the next fifty posts copied it, and the aggregate confidence of fifty sources reads as consensus. This is the single most useful thing to understand about YouTube SEO as a field: it is overwhelmingly a copying network, not a research network, and the primary source is one click away the entire time.

Descriptions: not a keyword container

The description is a genuine ranking input — it is one of the three things named in the ranking sentence. What it is not is a place to accumulate keywords. YouTube's tag documentation includes a warning that most description advice ignores entirely: "Adding excessive tags to your video description is against our policies on spam, deceptive practices, and scams."

That is not a soft ranking penalty. It is a policy violation category, in the same family as the behaviours that get videos removed. The block of forty comma-separated keywords at the bottom of a description, which was standard practice for years and is still recommended in guides published this year, is the exact thing that sentence describes.

Keyword density: never a thing here

Keyword density is imported from an old model of web SEO, and it does not map onto a platform whose stated relevance inputs include "video content". YouTube is not counting how many times you said the phrase. It is building an understanding of what the video is about from everything available, including the audio. Saying your target phrase eleven times does not make the video more about the subject; it makes it worse to watch, which damages the engagement half of the ranking sentence.

Say the subject naturally, in the words a person would use, as many times as a person would naturally say it. That is the whole rule, and it is the same rule as writing well.

Search is a different business from browse

Before optimising for search, work out whether search is your business. A large number of creators spend years doing SEO work on a channel that gets four per cent of its views from search, and a smaller number ignore search entirely on a channel where it would have been the growth engine.

The two traffic types behave so differently that they are better thought of as separate products sharing an upload button.

Most channels are one or the other and pretending to be both. The diagnostic takes two minutes: open YouTube Analytics, go to the Reach tab, and look at traffic sources across your last twenty videos. If YouTube search is under ten per cent, you are a browse channel and this article's metadata sections are worth an hour of your life, not a strategy. The interesting case is the middle. A channel at fifteen to twenty-five per cent search usually has a small number of videos carrying nearly all of it — one tutorial that ranks, quietly earning views every week while the rest of the channel lives and dies on the home feed. That pattern is a signal, not an accident. It means there is a search audience for what you do and you have found it once by accident. Finding it deliberately is the highest-return work available to that channel.

Which channels should genuinely care

Search rewards videos that answer a question a person can articulate before they watch. That covers more than tutorials: reviews, comparisons, how-to, troubleshooting, explainers, "is X worth it", buying guides, recipes, workouts, software walkthroughs, repairs, and anything where the viewer has a problem with a name.

Search largely ignores content where the appeal cannot be described in advance. Vlogs, most entertainment, commentary, challenge formats, and personality-driven work do not have a query behind them, because nobody wakes up and searches for the thing they did not know they wanted. That is not a weakness — browse is a far larger surface — but it means SEO effort on those channels is close to wasted, and the equivalent effort spent on packaging is not.

The trap of chasing search on a browse channel

There is a failure mode worth naming because it is common and expensive. A creator with an entertainment channel discovers SEO, starts choosing topics by search volume, and begins making videos that answer questions their audience never asked. The videos rank, modestly, and are watched by strangers who do not subscribe. Meanwhile the audience model that drove the channel's browse distribution gets muddier, because the system's picture of who watches this channel is now blurred across two unrelated populations.

The result is a channel that gains a trickle of search views and loses a river of recommended ones. If you take one strategic point from this piece, take that one: search is additive for channels whose audience already has questions, and dilutive for channels whose audience just wants the next episode. Keyword research with first-party data

Almost every keyword tool sold to creators produces estimates. They scrape autocomplete, model volume from Google data, and present a number with a confidence the underlying method does not support. Some of them are useful. None of them has access to YouTube's actual search logs.

YouTube does, and it gives you a window into them for free, inside Studio, in a tab most creators have never opened.

The Research tab

In YouTube Studio, under Analytics, there is a Research tab. It has two halves. One shows what your viewers have been searching for across YouTube. The other, "Searches across YouTube", lets you type any topic and see platform-wide search activity for it, with a volume indicator rather than a fabricated absolute number.

The volume indicator being relative rather than absolute annoys people who want a spreadsheet, and it should not. An absolute monthly search figure for YouTube is not something any third-party tool can actually know, so the choice is between an honest ordinal from the platform and a precise number from a model. The ordinal is better information, and it is the only one that is not a guess.

The half that shows what your own viewers searched for is the more valuable one and the more neglected. It is a direct answer to the question every content strategy is trying to guess at: what do the people who already like me want next. A query that appears there has a built-in advantage, because the people searching it are already in your audience model, which means a video answering it starts with the system's confidence rather than against it.

Content gaps

The Research tab flags some queries as content gaps — searches where viewers are looking for something and not finding enough good results. This is YouTube telling you, from its own data, where demand exceeds supply.

In web SEO terms this is a high-intent, low-competition keyword, except that instead of inferring it from backlink profiles you are being handed it by the platform. It is the closest thing to a free lunch that exists in creator strategy, and the reason it is underused is simply that it lives in a tab with no marketing behind it.

A caution that keeps this honest: a content gap is not a promise. Some gaps exist because the query is genuinely hard to answer well in video, some because the audience is tiny, and some because the people searching bounce off every result including the one you are about to make. Treat a flagged gap as a strong hypothesis worth one video, not as a guaranteed win worth a series.

Autocomplete, read properly

Typing a partial phrase into YouTube's search box and reading the suggestions is still the fastest free research method available, and it is more informative than people realise, because autocomplete is not a keyword list. It is an ordered list of what people actually complete that phrase with, which means it encodes the shape of demand, not just its existence.

Three refinements make it much better. Put a space and then a letter after your phrase to force variety ("thumbnail size a", "thumbnail size b"). Prefix with question words to surface the informational versions ("how to", "why does", "what is the best"). And search the phrase in a private window, because your own history is otherwise shaping what you see, which quietly turns research into a mirror.

Read the results page, not just the query

The most skipped research step is looking at what currently ranks. The results page tells you three things no keyword tool can.

  • What format YouTube believes the query wants. If the first eight results are all eight-minute talking-head explainers, that is the system's accumulated evidence about what satisfies this searcher. Making a forty-minute documentary for that query is a bet against a very large amount of behavioural data.
  • Whether the query is winnable. If every result is from a channel with millions of subscribers and a production budget, the engagement half of the ranking sentence is stacked against you. If the top results are three years old, poorly packaged, or answer a slightly different question, that is an opening.
  • What the packaging convention is, and therefore how to break it. Search results are a row of thumbnails like any other surface. If all eight look the same, the ninth that looks different gets the click even from a lower position.

Volume against winnability

Every keyword decision is a trade between how many people search a thing and how likely you are to be the answer. The useful version of this is a two-by-two, and the surprising cell is the one most creators avoid.

The bottom-left cell is where search channels are built, and it is unglamorous by design. A video that permanently owns a query searched two hundred times a month is worth more over three years than a video that ranks eleventh for a query searched fifty thousand times, because eleventh place earns approximately nothing. Intent match: the thing that actually decides it

Here is the mechanism that the metadata-first model of YouTube SEO cannot explain. Two videos target the same query. One has the phrase at the front of the title, in the first line of the description, in the tags, in the transcript. The other has a looser title and no particular keyword discipline. The second one ranks. This happens constantly and it makes the folklore look broken, because by the folklore's own model the first video should win.

It resolves the moment you take the second half of YouTube's ranking sentence seriously. "What videos drive the most engagement for a search." The system is not scoring text overlap. It is accumulating evidence about which video satisfies the person who typed those words, and it has vastly more evidence about behaviour than it needs about text.

The signal you should fear

The worst outcome in search is not a low click-through rate. It is what the industry borrowed from web search and calls pogo-sticking: a viewer searches, clicks your video, leaves quickly, and searches the same thing again. That sequence is an unambiguous statement that your video did not answer the query, and it is far more damaging than never being clicked, because it is specific evidence rather than an absence of evidence.

Everything about search optimisation should be organised around not producing that sequence. Which means, uncomfortably, that some standard packaging advice is actively harmful in search. A title engineered for curiosity rather than clarity attracts searchers whose question it does not answer. They bounce and re-search. You have taught the system that your video is a bad result for a query you were trying to own.

Matching the format the query implies

Queries carry implicit format expectations, and violating them produces the bounce sequence even when your content is excellent.

The rule underneath the table: in search, front-load the payoff. Withholding it builds watch time on browse traffic and destroys you in search, because the searcher's tolerance for delay is close to zero — they have seven other tabs and they did not come for you. Answer in the first ninety seconds, then earn the rest of the runtime by going deeper than the answer.

The title problem nobody admits to

A search title and a browse title are different objects with incompatible goals, and every guide that gives you one set of title rules is quietly assuming you only care about one surface.

A search title has to contain the words in the searcher's head. Its job is recognition: the person scanning results is matching what they typed against what they see, and a title that makes them work is a title they skip. Clarity beats intrigue, plainness is a feature, and the keyword near the front genuinely helps — not because of a ranking bonus, but because it is what the eye lands on first.

A browse title has the opposite job. Nobody typed anything. The title is competing for attention from someone who was scrolling, and clarity alone is invisible: "How to Fix a Leaking Tap" states a fact that a person who was not thinking about taps has no reason to engage with. Browse titles need tension, stakes, a number, a contradiction — something that creates a question the click answers.

Most creators resolve this by picking a house style and applying it everywhere, which means half their videos are optimised for the wrong surface. Three better resolutions:

  1. Decide per video, before you film. Some videos are search assets and some are browse plays. A search asset gets a plain title and earns for three years. A browse play gets an intriguing one and earns for ten days. Trying to make each video do both usually produces a title that does neither.
  2. Use the clarity-plus-one construction. State the thing plainly, then add one element of tension that does not obscure it. "How to Fix a Leaking Tap Without Turning Off the Water" is still findable, still matches the query, and now has a reason to be clicked by someone who was not searching. This is the highest-value title pattern on the platform and almost the only genuine way to serve both surfaces at once.
  3. Test it. Native title testing has been available globally since December 2025, and it resolves in days. A search-led title against a browse-led title on the same video is one of the most informative tests you can run, and almost nobody runs it because they have already decided what their titles look like.

Two mechanical constraints that are real. Titles truncate on mobile long before their character limit, and most impressions are mobile, so the front of the title is the only part you can rely on being read — which is the actual reason for front-loading, rather than any ranking effect. Thumbnails decide whether a ranking is worth anything

This is the part of YouTube SEO that web-SEO thinking has no equivalent for, and it is the part that most changes what you should do.

A YouTube search results page is not ten blue links. It is a column of thumbnails with titles attached, and the thumbnail occupies more visual area than everything else combined. Ranking third with a thumbnail that stops the scroll beats ranking first with one that does not — and because engagement for a query is itself a ranking input, winning the click from third position is how you end up first. Ranking is not the outcome. It is a starting position from which packaging does the actual work.

YouTube's own discovery documentation names the thumbnail alongside title and description as key metadata for discovery, while simultaneously rating tags as unimportant. The industry inverted that priority for a decade because tags are a text field a tool can fill in and thumbnails require design. That is the whole explanation.

What is different about a thumbnail for search

Search thumbnails and browse thumbnails are as different as their titles, and in a direction most creators find counterintuitive.

The specific insight worth acting on: in search, the thumbnail's job is disambiguation. Somebody searching for how to replace a particular part wants to see that part. Somebody searching for a software tutorial wants to see the interface, and ideally the version they have. A shocked face over a gradient tells a searcher nothing about whether this video covers their situation, which is why the browse-standard thumbnail underperforms in search results despite looking more professional.

The corollary is that a video which earns from both surfaces may want its thumbnail changed over its life. A video published as a browse play, packaged for attention, that settles into steady search traffic six weeks later is a common pattern — and repackaging it for the searcher at that point is one of the highest-return hours available on an established channel. The back-catalogue audit worth doing once a quarter

Sort your videos by search traffic share, not by views. Take the top ten. For each, ask whether the thumbnail would tell a searcher that this video covers their exact case. Most will not, because they were designed for a feed. Fixing those ten is usually worth more than the next three uploads, and it takes an afternoon.

The description, done properly

The description is a real ranking input that most creators either ignore or abuse. The version that works is shorter than the guides suggest and structured differently.

The first two lines are the only ones most people see, above the fold on the watch page and often in the search snippet. They should say what the video covers, in the words the searcher used, as a sentence a human would read. Not the keyword in isolation, not a channel slogan, not a call to subscribe. The specific question this video answers.

The body should be a genuine summary, three or four short paragraphs, covering what is in the video, for whom, and what it assumes. This naturally contains the semantic variants people search for, without any keyword discipline, because that is how describing something works. If you find yourself adding phrases that do not belong in a description written for a person, you have crossed from describing into stuffing.

What does not belong: keyword lists, comma-separated tag dumps, walls of hashtags, spun paragraphs restating the title, or the same three hundred words of channel boilerplate at the top of every video. The first of those is an explicit policy violation, and the last one dilutes the one part of the description the system reads most carefully.

The machine-readable layer: chapters, captions and transcripts

YouTube's ranking sentence names "video content" as a factor, which raises an obvious question: how does it know what is in the video? Partly through audio, partly through what is visually there, and partly through the structures you provide. Those structures are cheap, mechanical and mostly neglected.

Chapters

Chapters are the highest-leverage mechanical change available to a search-led channel, and they have hard requirements that people get wrong constantly. Per YouTube's documentation: the first timestamp must be 00:00, there must be at least three timestamps in ascending order, and each chapter must be at least ten seconds long. Miss any of those and chapters silently do not appear — which is why so many creators believe they have chapters and do not.

Three reasons they matter more than their effort suggests. They can surface as jump-to links directly in search results, which turns your one result into several entry points. They let a searcher confirm at a glance that their specific case is covered, which is the disambiguation problem again. And they give every system that reads your video — including the newer synthesising ones — a labelled map of its contents.

Write chapter titles for a searcher, not for yourself. "Intro", "Part 2", "More stuff" waste the slot. "Fixing the error on Windows", "What to do if it still fails", "Cost breakdown" are all things a person might be looking for.

Captions and transcripts

YouTube generates automatic captions for most uploads, and they are decent without being reliable — they struggle with names, technical terms, accents and noisy audio, which is to say precisely the words that are most likely to be your target query. Uploading your own caption file fixes exactly the words the automatic system gets wrong.

This is not the ranking cheat code some guides present it as, and no serious claim should be made about a transcript upload boosting rankings on its own. It is better understood as removing a failure mode: if your subject is a term the automatic captions consistently mishear, the video's audio is telling the system something false about what it is about. Correcting that is worth doing. Doing it in the hope of a keyword bonus is not.

The accessibility argument is stronger than the SEO one anyway, and it has a distribution effect of its own: a meaningful fraction of viewing happens with sound off, and accurate captions keep those viewers watching, which feeds the engagement half of the ranking sentence directly.

Say the answer out loud

This is the part with no field to fill in and the largest effect. If your video is about a query, somebody should say the query's answer, in plain words, in the audio. Not gesture at it, not demonstrate it silently while music plays, not leave it implicit in an edit. Say it.

Videos that communicate entirely through visuals and vibes are legible to humans and much less legible to every system that decides what a video is about. This has always been mildly true and is becoming more consequential as synthesising layers get inserted between the viewer and the catalogue. It costs nothing: one clear sentence, said out loud, near a chapter marker.

The layer that changes what "findable" means

At Google I/O in May 2026, YouTube announced Ask YouTube, a conversational search tool that takes a natural-language question and returns a structured, interactive response rather than a ranked list. In YouTube's own words, it "will compile the most relevant videos across all of YouTube's catalogue — including long-form videos and Shorts — and provide an interactive, structured response", with follow-up questions supported. It began with Premium members aged 18 and over in the United States, with a broader rollout stated as the plan.

Nobody can tell you how to optimise for this, and anyone claiming otherwise is guessing. What can be said is structural, and the structure is familiar to anyone who watched web search change.

A system that selects videos by reading what is in them selects on substance and specificity. Its inputs are the words you said, the structure you gave them, the clarity of your claims, and whether your video contains an answer that can be extracted and pointed at. Its inputs do not include your thumbnail, because at the moment of selection nobody has seen one. And its inputs do not include your tags, because they never did.

Two consequences follow, and they pull in opposite directions, which is why this is worth thinking about rather than reacting to.

The first is that everything in the previous section — chapters, accurate captions, saying the answer out loud, specific claims at identifiable moments — becomes more valuable rather than less. These were always the honest version of "helping YouTube understand your video". A synthesising layer rewards them more than a keyword matcher ever did.

The second is less comfortable. A layer that answers the question directly may reduce the number of clicks that reach anybody, in the same way that web search results pages increasingly answer queries without a visit. If that happens, the queries most affected will be the simple factual ones — exactly the low-volume, easily-answered long tail that this article recommended building on. That is a real strategic risk and the honest position is that it is unresolved.

The hedge is not to abandon the long tail. It is to make videos whose value cannot be extracted into a paragraph. It is worth being clear about what this list is not. None of these are penalised in some dramatic way, with the two exceptions noted. They are simply a way of feeling productive without changing the two things YouTube says determine ranking. The cost is not punishment. It is the hours.

Diagnosing a video that did not rank

When a search-targeted video fails, the failure has a location, and the location determines the fix. Working through them in order takes ten minutes and prevents the usual response, which is to change everything at once and learn nothing.

Step one: did it get impressions in search at all?

Analytics, Reach tab, traffic sources, YouTube search. If search impressions are near zero, the system does not consider your video a candidate for any query with volume. That is a relevance problem or a demand problem: either the query you targeted is not one people search, or nothing about your video communicates that it answers it. Step two: what queries did it actually surface for?

The same report shows the search terms that brought people in. This is the most under-read screen in Studio. Very often a video ranks well for a query adjacent to the one you targeted, which tells you what the system believes your video is about — and that belief is usually a more accurate description of the video than your own title was. When that happens, the fix is to retitle towards the query you are actually winning, not to fight for the one you wanted.

Step three: impressions but no clicks?

If search impressions are healthy and click-through is poor, you are ranking and losing the row. This is a packaging problem, and specifically a disambiguation problem — the searcher cannot tell from your thumbnail and title that you cover their case. This is the most fixable failure in the entire list, because it requires no new filming. Step four: clicks but no retention?

Step five: everything looks fine and it still does not rank

Research

The obvious target is "best espresso machine", which is high volume and completely unwinnable: the results page is wall-to-wall channels with a hundred times the subscriber count and years of accumulated engagement for that query. Recording it would be an act of optimism.

So go narrower, and look for the shape of demand rather than its size. Autocomplete on "espresso machine" plus a letter surfaces things like "espresso machine not enough pressure", "espresso machine descaling", "espresso machine for small kitchen". The Research tab shows moderate volume on the troubleshooting variants and — the useful part — the channel's own viewers have been searching for maintenance topics the channel has never covered.

That last fact is worth more than any volume estimate. These are people already inside the channel's audience model, searching for something it does not have. A video answering it starts with the system's confidence.

Choosing the target

Settle on the descaling query. Volume is modest. The current results are a mix of manufacturer videos with no personality and three-year-old uploads with poor packaging. Nothing on the first page addresses the specific machine models this channel's audience actually owns. That combination — real demand, mediocre incumbents, and a specificity axis nobody has used — is what a winnable query looks like.

Format

The query implies hands, a machine, steps, and a result. Not a story, not a review, not a listicle. The results page confirms it: everything ranking is a demonstration. So the video is a demonstration, chaptered by machine type, with the most common mistake addressed early because that is the actual reason people search this at all.

Title

The search-pure version is "How to Descale an Espresso Machine". Findable, plain, and it will never earn a browse impression in its life.

The clarity-plus-one version is "How to Descale an Espresso Machine Without Ruining the Seals". It still contains the query verbatim, so recognition is intact. It adds a stake that a person who was not searching might respond to, and — more importantly — it speaks directly to the fear that sent most of these searchers looking in the first place. This is the version to publish, and the plain version is the one to A/B test against it.

Thumbnail

The browse instinct is a face with an alarmed expression and the word RUINED in yellow. In search results, that thumbnail tells a searcher nothing about whether this video covers their machine.

The search-correct version shows the machine, clearly, with the descaling solution visible, and two or three words identifying the scope. A viewer scanning eight results can tell in a fraction of a second that this one is about their situation. That is the entire job, and it is why the "boring" thumbnail frequently beats the dramatic one on this surface.

Produce both. Run them against each other. The result is worth more than any assertion in this article, because it is about this audience.

Description and chapters

First two lines: what the video covers and which machines, in plain language. Then three short paragraphs of genuine summary — what descaling does, how often, what happens if you get it wrong. Where the two connect usefully is narrow and worth knowing: a Short answering a specific question can rank for that question, and Shorts appear in the conversational surface's catalogue alongside long-form. Thumbnails for Shorts matter outside the feed, in exactly the places search traffic comes from: the channel grid, search results, shared links. The creator tool market is largely built on the parts of YouTube SEO that stopped working, which makes evaluating it awkward. A rough guide.

Not worth paying for: tag generators and tag copiers, "SEO scores" out of a hundred, keyword difficulty numbers derived from tag overlap, description templates that stuff keywords, and anything promising a ranking based on metadata alone. Search on a channel with no history

Everything above assumes the system has some evidence about you. A new channel has none, and search behaves differently in that situation in a way that is worth planning around rather than discovering.

The second half of the ranking sentence — which videos drive the most engagement for a search — is a statement about accumulated behaviour. A new video from a new channel has no accumulated behaviour, and neither does the channel it belongs to, so the system has to estimate from what it can see: the relevance signals, and how similar material has performed. That estimate is conservative, which is why new channels routinely see a video appear in search results at position thirty for a day and then settle out of sight.

This is not a penalty and it is not permanent. It is the absence of evidence, and the only thing that fixes it is evidence. Competitive research in this space usually means copying tags, which we have established is copying a field that does nothing. The version that works takes longer and tells you more.

Pick the channel that consistently outranks you for queries you want. Then answer five questions about it, in order, none of which involve metadata.

  1. What format do their ranking videos share? Length, structure, where the payoff sits, whether it is demonstration or explanation. This is the accumulated answer to what satisfies searchers in your space, paid for with their upload history.
  2. What question do they actually answer? Often it is narrower or broader than the query suggests, and the gap between the query and what they deliver is where an opening usually is.
  3. What do their thumbnails have in common? If there is a convention across the whole first page, you now know both what works and what breaking it would look like.
  4. What are they not covering? Scroll their uploads for the adjacent questions nobody made a video about. Cross-reference against the Research tab. This is where content gaps live in practice.
  5. Where are they weakest? Out-of-date information, a machine or version they never covered, an assumption they make that half their audience does not meet. Specificity beats authority when the authority is generic.

What you are building is not a list of keywords to copy. It is a model of what the searcher in your category wants, derived from a channel that has already tested it hundreds of times at their own expense. That model is worth far more than their tag list, and it is available to anyone willing to spend an hour actually watching instead of running an extension. Evergreen demand, seasonal demand, and when to update rather than republish

Search queries are not stable. They have shapes over time, and choosing without knowing the shape is how creators end up with a library of videos that quietly stopped mattering.

Evergreen queries have flat demand for years. How to do a thing, why something happens, what a term means. These are the best assets on a search-led channel because a single video can serve them indefinitely, and they are the reason search compounds at all.

Seasonal queries spike predictably — gift guides, tax questions, exam periods, weather-dependent activities, anything tied to a calendar. The mistake is publishing them during the spike, when the incumbents already have months of engagement evidence. Decaying queries look evergreen and are not. Anything tied to a product version, a software interface, a price, or a year is on a clock. These can still be excellent targets — demand is often high and competition thin — but they need a maintenance plan, and a channel built entirely on them is on a treadmill.

The year-in-the-title question

Putting a year in a title works when the searcher genuinely includes it, which happens for categories where currency matters: best-of lists, buying guides, anything about a platform that changes.
