Which format to use
Three formats cover essentially everything a creator needs, and they are good at different jobs.
- JPG — lossy, no transparency, tiny files for photographs. The right default for thumbnails and any photo-heavy image. Its weakness is flat color and hard edges, where it introduces halos around text.
- PNG — lossless with full transparency. Perfect for logos, overlays, screenshots and flat graphics; wasteful for photographs, where it can be ten times the size of an equivalent JPG.
- WebP — lossy or lossless, with transparency, at roughly 30% smaller than JPG for the same visual quality. Supported everywhere that matters now. The best default for the web when nothing in your pipeline objects.
Transparency and the black background problem
Converting a transparent PNG to JPG is where most converters quietly ruin an image: JPG has no alpha channel, so the see-through areas become black. This tool paints transparency with a color of your choosing — white by default — so a logo on a transparent background comes out looking like a logo rather than a black box.
What it does not change
Pixel dimensions are preserved exactly. If you need different dimensions, use the resizer; if you need a specific file size, use the compressor. Keeping each tool doing one thing means none of them surprise you.

How do I convert a PNG to a JPG?

Will converting to JPG give me a black background?
