What this tool does

Every video on YouTube has a set of pre-rendered thumbnail images sitting on i.ytimg.com, generated from whatever the uploader supplied. This tool works out the video ID from whatever URL you paste, checks which of those sizes actually exist for that video, and hands you the ones that do.

The largest is maxresdefault at 1280×720 — the same file a custom thumbnail was uploaded as. Below it sit 640×480, 480×360, 320×180 and 120×90 versions that YouTube uses for smaller surfaces.

Why some sizes are missing

YouTube only generates a size if the source video could produce it. A 720p upload from 2011 has no 1280×720 thumbnail, and plenty of Shorts stop at 480×360. Rather than showing you a broken image or a grey placeholder, this tool checks each size first and only lists the ones that came back real.

How creators actually use it

• Competitive research. Pull the top ten results for a keyword you want to rank for and put their thumbnails side by side. Patterns in face size, text length and color show up fast.
• Recovering your own artwork. If you lost the source file, the 1280×720 version you uploaded is still there.
• Building a swipe file. Collect thumbnails that made you click and keep them as reference for style, not for copying.

A note on copyright

A thumbnail belongs to whoever made it. Downloading one for reference, analysis, commentary or a study of your niche is normal practice; republishing someone else's thumbnail as your own artwork is not. Use your judgement — and if you need a thumbnail of your own that looks like the ones winning in your niche, generate one instead of borrowing.
