Flip Image

A horizontal flip changes which way a face looks, and in a thumbnail the face should look into the frame, towards the text, not out of it.

100% free · runs in your browser · nothing is uploaded

Mirror an image left to right or top to bottom, turn it a quarter at a time, or straighten a tilted horizon. The image is edited in your browser and never uploaded.

What this tool does

Flip image files here without opening an editor or creating an account. Mirror a photo left to right or top to bottom, turn it 90° at a time, or drag the straighten slider to level a tilted horizon. Every button acts on what you see in the preview, so you can combine them in any order, and the download keeps the image at its original size.

How to flip an image

  1. Add the image. Drop it onto the page, paste it, or choose it from your disk.
  2. Flip or rotate it. Flip horizontal mirrors it left to right, Flip vertical turns it upside down as a mirror image, and the rotate buttons turn it a quarter at a time.
  3. Straighten it if needed. The slider tilts the picture by up to 45° either way and zooms in just enough to hide the empty corners.
  4. Download as JPG, PNG or WebP. A PNG keeps any transparency.

Why creators flip thumbnail photos

The most common reason is gaze. Viewers tend to follow where a face is looking, so a face on the left of a thumbnail that looks off the left edge pulls attention out of the frame. Flipping the photo turns the look back towards your title or product without a reshoot. The second is the front camera: phones often show, and some save, a mirrored selfie, and a horizontal flip turns it back into the view everyone else sees.

A flip mirrors everything in the picture, including lettering, logos and a shirt print, so flip the photo first and add any text afterwards. The add text to thumbnail tool is the next step for that.

No upload, no re-crop

Many of the pages that rank for this job are full photo editors that want an upload, an account or a watermark on the export. Here the image is read by your browser and redrawn on a canvas on your device, so nothing leaves it. A flip or a quarter turn keeps every pixel; only the straighten slider trims the edges. The file is re-encoded from that canvas, so it carries no orientation tag from the camera and shows the same way round in every app.

For better source photos in the first place, read how to take photos for YouTube thumbnails. To check the flipped result at feed size, use the thumbnail preview, or generate a thumbnail from scratch.

Frequently asked questions

How do I flip an image horizontally?

Drop the image onto this page, press Flip horizontal and then Download. The picture is mirrored left to right and saved at its original size.

How do I unmirror a selfie?

Flip it horizontally. A front camera often shows the scene as a mirror image, and one horizontal flip turns it back into the view other people see. Any text in the photo will read correctly again too.

What is the difference between flipping and rotating an image?

Flipping makes a mirror image, while rotating turns the picture without mirroring it. A vertical flip and a 180° turn both put the top at the bottom, but only the flip reverses left and right, so text in it reads backwards.

Does flipping an image reduce its quality?

The flip itself moves pixels without losing any, so a flipped PNG is identical in quality to the original. Saving as JPG or WebP re-compresses the image, which is a small loss; choose PNG if you need it lossless.

Is my image uploaded anywhere?

No. The image is read by your own browser and flipped on a canvas on your device. Nothing is sent to a server, so the original stays private.
