Changing the expression on a finished thumbnail
The editor's Expression tab changes the emotion on the face in an existing thumbnail while keeping the identity, hair, outfit and pose intact. The person stays the same person — they just react differently.
Eight presets: Shocked, Happy, Angry, Sad, Laughing, Mind Blown, Confused, Smug. Each is one edit and one request.
Starter and up
The Expression tab is part of the preset editor, unlocked on Starter. On Free it shows a lock — though the custom edit chat is never locked and can be asked for an expression change in plain English on any plan.
How to change it
- Open the thumbnail in the editor.
- Select the Expression tab.
- Click the expression you want. The edit runs immediately — there is no separate apply button.
- Wrong one? Undo and pick another. Each attempt is a separate request, so decide before you click rather than cycling through all eight.
Which expression to pick

Using it to A/B test properly
Expression is the cleanest single variable you can test in a thumbnail, because changing it leaves everything else identical. That is rare — most thumbnail tests compare two completely different images and teach you nothing you can reuse.
- Get one thumbnail to a state you are happy with.
- Apply expression A, download it.
- Undo, apply expression B, download that.
- Compare them at real viewing size in the free A/B test tool.
- Run the winner through YouTube's own thumbnail test, then apply the lesson to every future video.
Do this three or four times and you will know which expression your specific audience responds to — which is worth more than any general advice about thumbnails.
Do not oversell
A Shocked face on a calm tutorial buys the click and loses the watch time, and watch time is what decides whether YouTube shows the video again. Match the expression to what the video actually delivers. The best-performing thumbnail is not the loudest one — it is the one whose promise the video keeps.
If the face changes too much
- Identity drifted. Undo, then re-apply the expression on the original rather than stacking it on top of several other edits. Each generative edit compounds small changes.
- Only the mouth changed. Some expressions are subtle by design. If you need it stronger, use the custom edit chat with something explicit: "make the expression much more extreme, wide eyes and open mouth".
- Wrong person entirely. That is a face swap problem, not an expression one — swap your saved avatar back in first, then set the expression.
