What face swap does
Face swap replaces the person in an existing thumbnail with one of your saved avatars, while keeping the composition, background, lighting and text exactly where they are. The layout you already liked survives; only the identity changes.
It is the feature that turns a good thumbnail into a reusable template. Once one frame performs, you can reissue it for the next video with a different face — or the same face on a different video — without regenerating the whole image and hoping for the same luck twice.

How to swap a face
- Open any thumbnail in the editor.
- Select the Avatar tab in the right-hand panel.
- Under Swap avatar, click the saved face you want. The selected one is outlined.
- Click Apply swap. One edit runs — it takes a few seconds and costs one request.
- Not right? Undo and try a different avatar, or adjust the face's position afterwards with the avatar actions.
If you have no saved faces yet, upload one or design a character first — the swap list reads from your saved avatars.
What is kept, and what changes
Kept exactly as they were: the background and scene, the composition and framing, the lighting direction and grade, any text baked into the image, and your own text layers and overlays.
Changed: the person's face and identity, their hair where the new avatar's differs, and skin tone — matched into the light already in the frame.
What people use it for
- Reusing a winning layout. One high-performing frame, reissued across a series with the face swapped in fresh each time.
- Collab and guest episodes. Save the guest as an avatar, swap them into your standard podcast frame. Nothing else about the thumbnail has to change.
- Client work. An agency builds a layout once and swaps in each client's face — see running several brands.
- Fixing a bad generation. The scene came out perfect but the face is off-model. Swap it rather than regenerating the whole thing.
- Rebranding a back catalogue. Part of a full channel makeover: same frames, updated face.
Getting a clean swap
- Match the angle. A front-facing avatar swapped into a three-quarter pose has to be reinterpreted. A saved face shot from a similar angle to the thumbnail's pose swaps cleanest.
- Watch the lighting direction. Swapping a flatly-lit avatar into a hard side-lit scene can look pasted. If it does, apply a lighting preset after the swap to relight the whole frame consistently.
- Swap before you add text layers. Baked text survives the swap fine, but doing the heavy edits first and the fine layout last is less work overall.
- Fix the expression separately. If the swapped face is the right person with the wrong emotion, use the Expression tab — do not re-swap.
- Reposition after, not during. Size and placement are their own controls in the Avatar actions.
Whose face you can swap in
Swap in your own face, a face you have permission to use, or a character you generated. Do not swap in a real person who has not agreed to it — a celebrity, a public figure, or someone else's likeness pulled off the internet. Beyond the obvious legal exposure, YouTube's own policies on misleading and impersonating content apply to thumbnails as much as to videos.
